Choosing the Perfect Photographer for your Wedding or Event
In this week’s blog, I am going to be taking you through my top tips on finding and choosing your dream wedding photographer!
Set a budget
The first thing you should do when planning a wedding is set out a clear budget for each individual item. So before you start looking into different photographers, ensure you have an idea on what you are willing to spend. I also think it is a good idea to have a brief outline of which parts of the day you want to be captured (of course this can change), but if you are looking at photographers who have packages that include a certain amount of hours, they may not all be suitable for you.
Research
Now, before taking to google and searching ‘Photographers in my area’ take the time to scroll through Instagram and Pinterest to get an idea of the styles you love. Have a think about what you want from your photographer on the day and break this down into three sections - the ‘must haves’, the ‘would love to have but depends on budget restrictions’ and the ‘I am not sure I need this for my wedding day’. Below is an example of what this could look like:

Style of Photos
Whilst you are looking through Instagram and Pinterest you should get an idea of the style of photos that you love. Whether this is light and airy or detailed and warm, think about your wedding and it’s theme and let the styles scream out to you. You may be looking for someone to capture the more natural moments when you think no one is watching, or someone who can create posed moments with you and all your guests. Once you have a clear outline in your head you can begin to pick out photographers that will work perfectly for you.
Packages
Now it is time to start looking for the wedding photographer that will work for you and your wedding day. I feel that looking for any wedding supplier can be very overwhelming so be kind to yourself and only contact your favourite five photographers for meetings and full quotations. Once you have spoken to these photographers it may be that your requirements have changed due to their advice on your chosen venue or the number of guests attending, so be open to the packages but always revert back to your list above.
Meeting your Photographer
After reviewing a handful of photographers, I would recommend meeting up to three in person. This is a chance to get to know them, look through their portfolio and ask them all the questions you may have. You can also request to see testimonials from previous clients to make sure they are just as great as you believe them to be. I feel this is an important step when choosing your photographer to really click with them which is explored more below.
Their Personality
“Please choose someone you really click with” this is one of the many sentences I repeat to my clients throughout the planning stages. I stand by having suppliers that you trust and feel comfortable around and this is even more essential when it comes to your photographer. This person is going to be with you whilst you are getting ready with your bridesmaids, they will capture all your emotional and raw moments as well as being right there with you during your first moments as a married couple. So you want to feel comfortable and, in the nicest way possible way, completely forget they are even there!
Confirming your Photographer
Once you have picked your favourite and the perfect photographer for the day you now need to officially confirm them. As always please read through your contracts thoroughly and pick them up on anything you are not sure of. There are no silly questions when it comes to signing your contract which should outline everything they will offer and the package you have chosen to go for. If they have agreed to provide any specific shots or any extras ensure these are all included and nothing is missed off!
I hope these top tips will help you when it comes down to choosing your perfect photographer! If you are still unsure and would like any further advice on this, please email me at lbcweddingsandevents@outlook.com
