Why should you choose Lake Garda for your Intimate Wedding?

Written by Ginny Bevan from Weddings at Lake Garda

Italy is renowned for its history, culture, architecture, amazing food, delicious wines and stunning scenery and you can find all of this on Lake Garda. I know from the experience of working with so many couples that what drew them to Lake Garda as they searched for the perfect destination for their wedding is the beautiful settings, views that never get tiring, the relaxed vibe that comes from being somewhere warm and sunny, in a place known for its excellent food and wine, all without actually having to travel too far from home. Flights are less than 2 hrs from the UK and the south of Lake Garda where I am based is easily accessible from Verona, Bergamo or Milan airports.

Each resort has its own charm, somehow they all have a different vibe and style and they all offer a great range of accommodation. Lake Garda itself offers many different activities and things to see and do to keep your guests busy when they are not doing ‘wedding related’ activities. Advice to my couples is always to tell their guests to come for at least 5 days because my experience at their weddings, talking to guests, is that those who don’t stay longer all say ‘I wish I’d come for longer! I just didn’t know it would be like this’.

For the most part my couples are already in love with Italy and they are looking for a stunning backdrop for their wedding but also the opportunity, by choosing a destination wedding, to really put their own stamp on their wedding day. This shows up in different ways, for instance they may want to leave a few traditions behind because it’s not what they want for their wedding day or, because they are blending cultures and/or religions, they are searching for a neutral setting so that the guests expectations are shifted allowing a certain freedom to switch up how things will be done. I really do believe every couple should have the wedding that they want. On this day, of all days, they should be in charge of the decisions made and I am here to support them in making that happen.

Lonato Castle

When you’re daydreaming of your perfect wedding venue is it your own castle for the day? With views all around towards the lake but also the countryside behind and lots of outdoor space for you and your guests to enjoy everything from the ceremony to the aperitif and further into the night for the wedding reception and party?

Set 5kms from the shores of Lake Garda Lonato Castle is set on hilltop enjoying views in every direction and it’s a really versatile venue. There are a number of different areas where your civil ceremony could be held including a large lawn within the castle walls or another by the castle walls with views between the battlements towards the lake. Equally, should it be necessary, there is also inside space so you will always be covered, should the weather decide to be unkind, whatever happens.

An Italian wedding must have, of course, have amazing Italian food and the caterers at Lonato Castle do not disappoint on this front. The celebrations start with an aperitif that truly offers something that everyone will love and plenty of it, all accompanies with prosecco, Spritz and flavoured waters. This is followed by a delicious wedding breakfast with 3 courses and ultimately the wedding cake, no one is leaving hungry!

The evening celebrations that follow, which can include fireworks if you want to start the party with a bang, can carry on to into the small hours of the morning and coaches can be arranged to take your weary party goers home at the end of the festivities.

The easiest resort to stay in is Desenzano del Garda which is just a 15min drive away. Desenzano is the largest resort on Lake Garda and has a train station as well as the port for ferries across the lake and there’s a really good selection of accommodations as well as a beautiful lake front.

Isola del Garda

If you want something quite magical for your wedding then you could consider Isola del Garda which is a beautiful, stunning, private island just off the shores of the western shores of Lake Garda. There is a wonderous, show-stopping moment when your guests, arriving by boat, first see the stunning villa that takes pride of place on the island.

Your civil ceremony can be held on the stunning Loggia looking out over Lake Garda but there are also more spaces available if you wanted to use a different location for a symbolic ceremony. Without a doubt, this is one of the most photogenic, unique and sought-after locations on the lake. There is such an incredible atmosphere to the island that can only be felt in person but there’s no doubt in my mind, each time I visit it, that it’s a special place - and there is no escaping the wow factor.

There are a couple of options available for you on Isola del Garda. You could choose, mid-week, to just have your wedding ceremony on the Isola del Garda and then, following a glass or two of prosecco and some photos, take your guests back to the mainland for your wedding reception. This gives you the freedom to choose a different venue which gives your guests two events for the price of one. Equally, there is also the possibility to stay on the Isola for your entire event ceremony, aperitif, wedding breakfast and a party till the small hours. We bring in caterers to create gorgeous food to keep everyone full of energy for the party that will come later and of course, we can bring in DJ’s, bands, lighting, whatever you need to create the perfect setting for your celebrations.

Since the villa on the Isola is still a private family home there is no accommodation here so the best resorts to stay in are either Gardone, Salò or Portese which are a beautiful, but not too lengthy, boat trip away. It’s possible to walk between the two resorts of Salò & Gardone so I usually tell guests to choose whichever as they will never be too far away from other guests.

La Torre San Marco

This beautiful tower (LA Torre means the tower) was originally built as a folly to the villa situated on the other side of the road, back in the days when there wasn’t a road. Standing proudly on the shores of Lake Garda now it’s quite the landmark and a cause for much curiosity for those who don’t know about it.

La Torre is an event location that has a lot of fabulous outdoor space from which to enjoy every moment of your wedding while enjoying being right next to Lake Garda and enjoying those views. It has a license for a civil ceremony which you can have on the lawns facing the lake. Following this, you can seamlessly move your guests to the bar area for a glass of prosecco or Spritz and the delicious aperitif.

While everyone is busy drinking, eating and generally enjoying the ambience the staff will be busy transforming the lawn from ceremony set-up to reception layout which they do with well-practised ease. You can then lead your guests back to their tables for a delicious meal.

Enjoying the wedding breakfast as the evening creeps in and twinkling lights appear across the lake is simply magical. You can start your party off with a fizz, pop & bang of fireworks from the lake if you like. Past midnight there are a number of different options to keep your party going either by paying a supplement (mid-week) for the later time or, at the weekends, joining in with the rest of the in-crowd who come to party there as it turns into one of ‘the’ places to be on Lake Garda. Tucked away under the tower and linked to the tiny private port is also a gorgeous little piano bar to discover as well as the uber cool Vineria (wine bar) on the first floor, there are so many options.

The Lake Garda will not disappoint, you and your guests will leave this stunning location wishing you could do it all over again! Well that is the beauty of this exclusive service, when you land back in the UK you can celebrate your love once again with a showstopping party!
